Type 2 Diabetes Has Overtaken Type 1 in Young Patients. Are We Treating the Disease — or Its Consequence?

Before we talk about India's diabetes problem, perhaps we should first look at Tamil Nadu. Today's (17/09/2026) Times of India reports a finding that should make all of us stop and think: Type 2 diabetes has overtaken Type 1 diabetes among young patients. The study analysed 10,449 people diagnosed with diabetes by the age of 25. Type 2 diabetes accounted for 51.6%, compared with 45.5% for Type 1. What is particularly concerning is that Type 2 diabetes — traditionally considered a disease of adulthood — is increasingly appearing in young people. Another important observation: obesity and family history were more prevalent among those with Type 2 diabetes. Dr. V. Mohan of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation has been highlighting the relationship between obesity and diabetes for years. His Diabetes Specialities Centre established an Obesity & Weight Management Centre in 2012 and a Bariatric Surgery Unit in 2013. Its current website continues to list procedures including ga...

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Addiction: A New Hope for Treatment-Resistant Substance Use Disorders

Addiction Is More Than a Habit Addiction is often misunderstood as a lack of willpower or poor self-control. In reality, addiction is a chronic medical condition that affects how the brain processes rewards, motivation, memory, and decision-making. Whether it involves alcohol, drugs, nicotine, or even certain behaviors, addiction can make individuals continue seeking a substance despite knowing its harmful consequences. Many people successfully recover through counseling, medications, rehabilitation programs, and support groups. However, some individuals continue to relapse despite receiving the best available treatments. This has led researchers and clinicians to explore newer treatment options, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Understanding Addiction and the Brain Deep within the brain lies a network known as the reward pathway . This system helps us experience pleasure and motivates us to repeat activities that are beneficial for survival, such as eating and social interact...

Why Prevention Matters A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) may start as a small problem — but for many people, it keeps coming back and affects daily life. The good news? Don’t Hold Urine for Too Long Many people ignore the urge to urinate because of work, travel, meetings, or busy schedules. But holding urine for long periods allows bacteria more time to multiply inside the bladder. 👉 Regularly emptying the bladder helps keep the urinary tract clean....

For women who have tried lifestyle changes, medications, and ovulation-inducing drugs with no success—what’s next? Two major paths emerge: IVF or Bariatric Surgery. Both have their place. The answer lies in exploring second-line and specialized treatments, often with a multi-disciplinary approach. 🔄 Why First-Line Treatment Fails For some women, PCOD is resistant to standard therapy due to: - Severe insulin resistance - Underlying metabolic syndrome - Significant hormonal imbalance - Mental health issues impacting compliance 🧬 Next-Line Medical Treatments to Consider 1. Advanced Hormonal Therapies Anti-androgens like Spironolactone or Flutamide help manage hirsutism and acne. GnRH analogs (in specific cases) to suppress ovarian hormone production and regulate cycles. 2. Ovulation Induction Alternatives Letrozole or Clomiphene in higher or combination doses Injectable gonadotropins (FSH/LH) Trigger injections like hCG to...
